Off and on for the past year and a half Khaela and I have been working on the follow up to our EP "Poor Aim: Love Songs" thinking that it would be something similar to a piece of cake, pie, or chocolate chip cookie.
Every part of Poor Aim came together with a lightning-like speed; from the recording, to the track order, to the manufacturing and sale of the finished product. The EP was the first in an ongoing limited-edition series by States Rights Records and Slender Means Society and sold out incredibly fast. We released it on vinyl with K a couple months later and the first pressing sold out as well. After touring all over the US multiple times and burning around 1000 CDRs to give away with the vinyl version we've decided to re-release and repackage Poor Aim with remixes by White Rainbow, Lucky Dragons, Strategy, and me, YACHT. The new version of Poor Aim will be officially released in September, but you'll probably be able to buy it from us at shows and on our webstations soon-ish... like in July or August? (2007, guys. DEEP.)
Meanwhile, in Portland, Oregon, and Olympia, Washington... Khaela and I drove back and forth a bit to get in some much needed time at the Dub Narcotic studio up in Oly. Calvin set everything up and engineered the analog stuff for us. We recorded most of the new record on my iMac and only ran into serious trouble at the very end... I use pirated software. I'll be the first to admit that. The certain audio software of my choice has been historically hard to crack and has been sort of an unreliable program to use due to its "I could stop working for you at any time" nature. They are smart over there in Germany. No one knows why it stops working. No one knows how. It's not calling home to the internet and shutting itself off. It's not creating an invisible file that tells it to stop working. It's not even embedding some sort of copyright violation code into the song files... I don't know what it's doing, but it stinks. Luckily I have two computers and they are Apple computers. The iBook has never had a problem with the audio software (knock on wood, literally), so I put it in FireWire target mode and selected it as the startup disk for the iMac. Totally weird; the iMac uses its own CPU, RAM, screen, keyboard, mouse, etc., but uses the iBook's hard drive. Well, it worked. We finished the album with this weird setup and I promised myself that one day, when I can afford it, I'll give those smart Germans $500 for their fancy software.
Emotionally making stuff with Khaela was rough at times and it was awesome at times. Khaela and I work well together. We also fight a lot and sometimes have very strong opposing opinions regarding the direction and production of the music. Sometimes we both feel like the other is trying to "ruin" the song and we have super trouble having to let go of the idea and feeling we had for it originally. Collaboration is fucking tough! We both came from comfortably making our musics entirely on our own, and when you add someone else to the mix this shit gets weird and cool but also hard. All in all, Khaela I love you and I'm glad we have a weird pop band together.
The new record is done. It's 10 tracks and it's called "Paper Television." It comes out in October and we're going to tour through the US and up in Canada playing all these new songs, showing new videos, and making clothing optional dance parties (party naked, bro). It's looking like the record will come out in Japan and Australia sometime, too, but I don't know the details of that stuff just yet. Europe is in the works. We'll be touring everywhere in 2007.
I know, I know. October is so far away! It feels crazy to me to have to wait that long to share all of this new stuff. I'm sure once promos are made and distributed around it'll be all over the internet, so we can talk about it then! Until then, come see us on our micro tour next month. PEACE HANDS TOUR 2006 with The Blow, YACHT, and Thunder Sundress. CHECK IT!
I don't think Jona was talking about anything involving Cycling '74. But, Jona, in any event, I have a potential and thrifty solution to our mutual problem you discuss here. Details to follow. I'm super psyched to hear this new stuff. Take care!
dude! basically all of london is salivating constantly in anticipation of some kind of yacht/blow tour. it's good for our so-called-drought, but my tongue is starting to hurt. get over here!
may the
dragon force be with you!
WOOOW!! Yeah!! im so excited for this. thanks for being a musical trooper and working hard to get this done. i predict magic and new star constellations will come from this release.
my old roommate got a really good deal on Logic by buying it on eBay. you might consider checking there for whatever software you're using.
Sounds like you have some great stuff coming up! I can't wait.
it sounds like you are having the same problems that adam was having last year right before Live 5 came out... Live 6 is supposed to come out in june... i think i see a pattern here.
We released it on vinyl with White Rainbow, Lucky Dragons, Strategy, and me, YACHT.
wait, what does that mean? can i have a copy? i forgot about this until today and i saw paul and he was all "hey are you also gonna have your remix on the poor aim re-issue?" i guess i forgot?

HA! I just realized there was a single quote where a quote should have been and made this post confusing and incorrect. The new Poor Aim with remixes hasn't come out yet. We'll have it on this website, on K's site, on the Blow site, and at shows sometime near the end of the summer. Then in stores in 2007.
I can't wait to hear it.
I hope we see it out on vinyl.
I hope we see you guys out on the east coast.
hey so regarding this tour you speak of. do know that you have friends in the Canadian Prairies who'd love to see you.
just sayin. xo

I am so excited for this record. Eagerly awaiting release...October? Seems so far away.
