The Blow's label here in Europe is called Tomlab and they're based in Cologne, Germany. They've put out some friends like Casiotone for the Painfully Alone and Final Fantasy, and have offered this friend (me) a chance to share more friends' music with France. Friends, friends, friends! Tomlab curates an hour-long monthly program on the French National Radio for all of the college campuses in France. I'm not sure if it's available as a stream online or not, but as soon as I know I'll edit this. In the meantime here is big MP3 for you to download. I'm very excited to share all of these previously unreleased songs with you, including a brand new YACHT song with Claire singing the "hook," and two new Blow remixes.

The MP3 has the cover art already built-in, but if it doesn't display for you for some reason you can grab it here:

I don't get it, you're thiiiis close to denmark (i'm holding my thumb and index finger vere close to each other right now), but still you do not come by to play here?

I heard from a friend that interwieved khaela, that the blow will head for denmark in the spring though - and in case you haven't got anyone to arrange a gig for you yet, just let me know, and I'll do something. I'd actually love to help, if I could.

I think we have a couple of mutual acquanitances as well. You know Nis Bysted e.g., right?

jona i think it is so so so funny when you do a song that is a YACHT REMIX of a BLOW SONG. because, you were the first dj. and now you're djing yourself.

wait. it goes deeper! you just djed a song on the radio that was you re-djing a song that you originally djed?

now i am wondering if i'm using the word DJ properly. i have a feeling i am not.

Dear Morgan Downer,

Yes! You are partially right. It could be considered funny that I remixed myself, you are right there, but you're using DJ funny.

"Remixing" and "DJing" are pretty different, but overlap a little in some cases. Remixing usually implies that the remixer has created a new arrangement, new elements, or something completely new, but inspired by the original track. This can be done by recording instruments and voices, using drum machines, etc.

DJing is usually the gentle art of playing recordings of music (vinyl, CD, MP3) for an audience, sometimes live, sometimes over the radio, and other times in podcasts or MP3s like the above. I have a deep respect for DJs and how good ones are able to "keep the vibe" or have a little bit of ESP in knowing what you want to hear and how you want to dance.

Now your "mashups" are where we get into remix territory. This is where you take an a cappella of track and replace its original instrumental and replace it with another, equally or lesser known instrumental. This is where you'll get your Missy Elliott vs The Strokes, etc.

Please, friends, chime in if you have more to add!

PS-

Martha, I want to come to Denmark! I don't know if it can happen on this trip, though.

Sam, it's sort of a Shoboshobo jumper on Flickr... Luke from Lucky Dragons made it for me with Mehdi of Shoboshobo in the style of Shoboshobo! So it's like a legitimate knock-off?

Thanks guys!

Jona @ November 15, 2006 2:46 AM

Is that you singing on the penny song? Holy shit it's good!
